Bridal showers for destination weddings.?
Is it okay to throw someone a bridal shower when they're having a destination wedding? My friend is the MOH for a girl who's getting married in Mexico. The only guests are immediate family and the MOH and bestman (as well as their partners). She wants to throw the bride a shower and invite 6 friends, the bride's mom and sister-in-law, and also an aunt and cousin. Only the mom and sister-in-law are going to the wedding as it's immediate family only.
She wants to know if this is considered okay? If you were invited to a shower in this situation, would you be put off by it? Note that the bride has NOT asked for the shower and it'll be a surprise.
Deciding on whether or not to have a shower should not be determined by the type of wedding. If this person is a friend, and the heart is moved to celebrate, then have the shower and let the guests determine whether to attend or not. Maybe the shower should be a celebration at a restaurant or some other non-traditional style event. There are always folks who are offended at not being invited to the wedding. Laying the groundwork ahead of time can reduce the impact. Even for 'traditional' weddings, many folks are invited to the shower - to celebrate the upcoming wedding-- but they are not invited to the wedding/reception.
The earlier idea of having a reception after the destination wedding is a good idea-- it's similar to the situation where folks get married in the area of one spouse and have a 2nd reception, or after party in the locale where the other spouse's family members and friends can join in the celebration.
